Program Overview

The Healthcare Billing and Coding certificate program covers the essential principles of medical billing and coding. Students will understand the critical connection between providing healthcare services and securing appropriate reimbursement. This certificate program prepares students for entry-level positions in the field. Completing the program prepares students for two industry-recognized professional certifications: Certified Professional Biller and Certified Professional Coder.

What You'll Learn

Students will gain foundational skills in medical coding, billing, reimbursement, medical terminology, and the flow of information within health information technology (HIT) systems. The program also introduces key aspects of the U.S. healthcare system and how data, documentation, and claims processes connect. Students prepare for two certification exams: the Certified Professional Biller (CPB®) exam, which validates expertise in insurance claims, reimbursement, and billing compliance, and the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) exam, which certifies proficiency in translating clinical documentation into standardized ICD-10-CM, CPT®, and HCPCS Level II codes.


Career Preparation

 The program equips students to work effectively in medical billing and coding departments, as well as billing and coding facilities. The required coursework for the Healthcare Billing and Coding certificate can also be applied towards the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration. It also equips students for two industry-recognized credentials, the Certified Professional Biller and Certified Professional Coder, which strengthen employability and career advancement prospects, as a medical biller, reimbursement specialist, billing manager, medical code, coding auditor, or compliance specialist in hospitals, clinics, and billing organizations.
